User Experience can change the game!!

Bad User experience

Bad User experience

Lot’s of innovative projects get failed due to bad user experience. Be it big projects like ERP within an enterprise or a small website of a small shop. It’s the people who are going to use/view. If the end product, though having lot’s of capability, is not easy to use then sure the product is going to see the phase-out phase sooner.

New functionalities may increase the capability of the tool/portal but equally important is the user adoption. I’ll share one of my experience, out of many such instances.

There is a new news aggregator tool in market known as Feedpost. When I came across this, I was excited as it’s giving me options to quickly go through many magazines, current news in different topics, including business and economics. But when I signed up it sent invitation emails to all my mail contacts, automatically without asking me anything!! I was taken aback when some of my contacts complained about it. Even it sent reminders to my contacts too!! It was such a bad experience I couldn’t dare to use this tool. Recently I have sent one email to the founder of the tool explaining the issue. I hope they’ll fix this issue soon and no other new user get’s impacted in future!

There is another classic example – evolution of Windows and Macintosh compared to not so easy to use Unix/Linux.

Newtab as a BlankTab in Mozilla Firefox

If you are a regular user of Mozilla for browsing then you must have noticed that whenever you open a new tab then the default Mozilla tab appears having url appears.

I feel this annoying. In recent versions of firefox it’s bit difficult to set the new tab as blank. But you can do this by changing the config file associated with Mozilla. The steps are described as below:

Step-1: Enter in url field “about:config” without quotes.

Step-2: Click on “I’ll be careful” button and then enter “browser.newtab.url” without double quotes in the search field.

Step-3: double click on the value column and then input “about:blank” without quotes.

Step-4: Now press ‘OK’. That’s it now test by opening a newtab.

Which wordpress version

Guys I am using WordPress since 2.2 version. But since then it has changed a lot. Now it’s very much developed, new functionalites have been added, existing functionalities have been extended. More the stability have been increased.

I used to upgrade my wordpress installations to the latest, of course after checking the compatibility issues. WordPress also suggests to always upgrade to latest versions. As of today wordpress is in 3.5.1 version. Upgrading to latest version provides a lot of benefits, such as:

  • Stability
  • Security
  • New features
  • New Functionalities
  • More responsive
  • etc

WordPress has inbuilt feature of notifying if new version is released to public. If you remember your version of WP then it’s good but in case you have forgotten your WP version then you should find it out before upgrading. Though knowing the existing version is not compulsory but if any issues happen or your website/blog got broken after upgrading then you should be in a condition of getting some support from your friends / online community. The first thing anyone will ask you is the old version.

Note: Though WP team test numerous aspects numerous times before releasing a new version to public, still the experts recommend to backup your site before upgrading the version.

WordPress used to display the current version at the right-bottom of the admin dashboard. But recently WP discontinued to display the existing version, instead it’s displaying the latest version available to upgrade.

Now the question is how to identify the existing version of wordpress.

There are many ways to identify the existing version. I’d suggest the best and simplest method of knowing the current version of WordPress. This method holds good for any wordpress sites.

If you come across a wordpress website/blog then simple right click on the web page and goto ‘view source‘ option. Then  try to search the word ‘wordpress’, without quotes. You will come across a code such as below-

wordpress version

Here you found the existing version of wordpress installation.

Note: By default WordPress displays the version info publicly. This might cause a security threat. If you want to hide this info for your WP installation then you can follow below steps

  1. Navigate to root directory of WordPress installation
  2. Goto wp-includes folder
  3. Open the ‘default-filters.php’ file in edit mode.
  4. Search for ‘wp_head’ keyword.
  5. Here you can see few lines containing the word wp_head. But you can see a line which would be similar to below

add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘wp_generator’ );

You need to delete/comment out this line. So that the wordpress version number will not be available to public.

Now you can proceed with upgrading your wordpress installation.
